Animal welfare fortnight

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) will spread the message of kindness and compassion during the animal welfare fortnight celebrations which will be held from January 14 to 30.

"We have suggested several measures to the government to check cruelty against animals, especially cattle, which are transported over long distances for slaughter.

Animal welfare organisations have been asked to inform Superintendents of Police in their area or the District Collectors about any such act," R. Balasubramanian, secretary, AWBI, told reporters here on Friday.

"Jallikattu"

The AWBI had written to government authorities to phase out sports such as "jallikkattu", he said. Awareness would also be spread on legal provisions such as the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Wildlife Protection Act, he said.
